Our relationships require our passion and attention. Organizations are lean, global and matrixed, with nowhere to hide from emails or text. Everyone is busy. The world we live in places demands on all of our relationships, with constant communication, and the stresses of a global uncertainty. When the stressors are not managed, relationships are often a casualty.

For adults, this kind of event could send us into a downward spiral of epic proportions. This is largely because, unlike this 12-year-old, adults have had years of additional “lessons” that train us to fear revealing any of our imperfections—especially in public. As we age, the messages can drown out our natural inclinations to carry on without skipping a beat after we fall down. So how can we, as adults, embody some of the grace that was manifest in this young gymnast?

This isn’t just an opportunity for Japanese leaders. Today, leaders everywhere need to step up the kind of conversations we are having about our organizations, and our world. We need to go one step further when we build new routines for a new world. We need to pause and listen. We need to prioritize our time to understand the diversity and enormity of the visions held by people in our organizations for the future.
