Gretchen L. Schmelzer, Ph.D.
Senior Consultant
 Dr. Gretchen Schmelzer assists with the design and delivery of customized leadership development programs that focus on organizational transformation, conflict management, and coaching individuals through change. She works with individuals and with larger groups, helping them find their own solutions to team, interpersonal, organizational and/or community concerns.
Gretchen's expertise includes extensive work in psychological and cognitive assessment, family and organizational systems, and interventions for treating traumatic stress. She is also a Lecturer in the Department of Counseling and Applied Educational Psychology at Northeastern University in Boston.
PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE
Gretchen's consulting and leadership experience is grounded in a decade of clinical therapeutic work. Her training includes a Post-doctoral Fellowship at the UMASS Medical School's Department of Preventive and Behavioral Medicine as well as a Clinical Fellowship at the Harvard Medical School. Gretchen has provided individual and group counseling in a variety of settings, including creating wellness groups and assessment instruments for health behavior change. Her work on women's wellness was featured in the July 2001 issue of the Massachusetts Psychologist.
She has led training workshops in mindfulness meditation, and consulted to hospitals, school systems and community agencies on leadership and group development. A twotime National Champion in Rowing, Gretchen also has extensive experience working with Olympic, Master's and Collegiate level coaches and athletes focusing on mental skills training for competition preparedness, as well as racing and training strategies, and team dynamic issues.
EDUCATION
Gretchen received her doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Northeastern University and her Master of Science degree in Counseling Psychology from Springfield College. She received her baccalaureate degree in German Literature from Mount Holyoke College. She continues her training, recently completing an internship at the Center for Mindfulness Stress Reduction Clinic at UMASS Medical School, and clinical training in group therapy through the Northeastern Society for Group Psychotherapy.
