Those of us working in leadership with a focus on emotional intelligence, resonance and neuropsychology research have long seen conclusive links. Performance, loyalty to an organization, discretionary effort— it’s all linked to a person’s happiness—both at work and in life. That’s right: Happiness matters—in a very big way.

Coaching with compassion involves helping people bring more of their passions and aspirations to work.Take the time to teach and lead your employees. People are hard-wired to learn through relationships and by mirroring their mentors. Instead of expecting employees to change by reading or listening to information, take the time to teach and lead your employees through example.

What was once a humble, no frills approach to training and play has become a world in which every athlete has a coach to reach optimal performance. What will it take to shave off that last two-hundredths of a second? For adults, this kind of event could send us into a downward spiral of epic proportions. This is largely because, unlike this 12-year-old, adults have had years of additional “lessons” that train us to fear revealing any of our imperfections—especially in public. As we age, the messages can drown out our natural inclinations to carry on without skipping a beat after we fall down. So how can we, as adults, embody some of the grace that was manifest in this young gymnast?
